Brantford: ON - Last Saturday, March 7th, our annual Alumni Hockey Game took place, right here in Brantford at the TD Civic Centre.
Last year, the event returned for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, where the Alumni took a 5-2 win over our Men's Extramural Hockey team.
The stage was set this year to be a thriller, and both teams were hungry for a victory.
In the first period, both teams came out with a torrid pace and physicality, and despite their numerous power plays, the Alumni were unable to solve Extramural goaltender
Jacob Smith.
The middle frame began tied at 0-0, but the Alumni finally broke through on the man-advantage, taking a 1-0 lead into the third period.
The final frame opened up with lengthy possession from the Extramural team, and finally broke through on
Mitchell Hartman's goal in the opening minutes of the third period.
Tyler Warnez followed with a goal of his own, giving the Extramural team a 2-1 lead, but the Alumni tied the game at two goals apiece shortly after.
With just over three minutes remaining the third,
Benjamin Manser-Sachs fired a seeing-eye shot from the point, giving the Extramural team a 3-2 lead.
Despite the Alumni's efforts, they were unable to find an equalizer, as the Extramural team held the fort down to secure the win.
Extramural goaltenders Smith,
Joshua Damji, and
Daniel Ferrante split action in the win.
This year's edition of the Laurier Brantford Alumni Hockey Game was one to remember, and we hope to build off the success in next year's edition, where the Extramural team enters as defending champions.
