Extramural Volleyball Team Win Championship at Home Tournament

Brantford-ON:

In their first tournament of the year, hosted here in Brantford at Laurier's very own Laurier Brantford YMCA, Laurier's Co-Ed Volleyball team took to the court last Friday in hopes of a strong start to their season.

In a near-perfect day of volleyball, the Golden Hawks went undefeated on route to winning the championship.

Laurier started their day winning 2 sets to 0 (25-5, 25-18) against Seneca College, and in their second and final game of the round-robin stage, Laurier took down DC-OT(1) in a three-set thriller. Laurier took set 1 25-22, before falling in set 2 25-9, setting the stage for a thrilling third and final set. It came down to the final seconds of play, but the Golden Hawks secured the victory with a 15-13 win. Their 2-0 record sent them straight to the semi-finals and a match with DC-OT(2).

With a spot in the championship game on the line, the Golden Hawks took down DC-OT(2) in a statement victory, winning 2-0 (25-14, 25-15), setting up the tournament final between Laurier and DC-OT(1), a rematch from earlier in the day.

The Golden Hawks did not disappoint, winning set 1 by a score of 25-20, and winning set 2 with a nail-biting score of 27-26.

In front of a rowdy crowd, Laurier made their fans and school proud last Friday, and hope to keep up their winning ways the rest of the season.

Laurier's next tournament is January 24 at UTM.
