Intramural Volleyball Rules

Team Composition

  • Roster Size: minimum 7 people, maximum 10 people
  • No more than 3 extramural and/or varsity players per team
  • A maximum of 6 players are permitted on the court at one time
  • A match may not proceed with less than 4 players
    • If the minimum number of players are not present, the team will default
    • An exception can be made if an injury occurs during a game
  • Teams must have at least 2 players of each gender on the court at all times

Match Procedures

  • Please be in the gym and ready to participate at least 10 minutes before your first game.
    • If your team is not on the court and ready to play by 5 minutes after your start time, it is an automatic forfeit against you for the entire game.
    • A 24-hour notice is a requirement if your team will be missing from the game(s).
    • Without any notice your team will face a forfeit, and the opposing team will win the match.
  • All matches are best out of 3 sets to 15, win by 2 and capped at 17
  • If the minimum number of players are not present, the team will default
  • Default matches result in a match score of 2-0
  • If both teams default, it will result in a match of 0-0
  • Captains are responsible for rock, paper, scissors at the start of the match. The winner will determine which team will serve first, the loser will pick sides
  • The net will be set to women’s height.
  • Male athletes will NOT be allowed to jump serve

Rules

  • Volleyball Canada Indoor Rules Apply with the following adaptations 
  • All sets are scored by rally point. A point will be rewarded every time the ball it put in play
  • The referee must be notified the formation when beginning a set with less than 6 players
    • For example, 3 at the net and 2 at the back. As players rotate, this formation must be maintained throughout the match
  • Players rotate each time they win back the serve. If more than 6 players are signed in for the match, the previous server will rotate out and the substitution will come in. During this process, a substitution may be skipped to maintain on the court gender requirements
  • During the course of play, the ball may be played by any part of the body. However, kicking motions are not permitted
  • Double hits, pushes, and lifts will be monitored, and referees may use discretion based on the flow of the game
  • It is a point or loss of serve if:
    • A player serves out of order
    • A player steps over the serving line while serving
    • A player makes contact with any part of the net
  • Reaching over the net is a violation, except in the following situations:
    • On a follow-through when spiking
    • Blocking an opponent’s attack on the 3rd hit after the opponent has contacted the ball

Blocks do not count as a touch on the ball and blockers are able to contact the ball immediately after their block

Additional Notes

  • Any abusive language toward officials, players, and/or intramural staff WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Any profanity or degrading of the official will result in a technical foul.  
    • Continued verbal harassment and questioning of officials can result in a second technical foul and expulsion from the game
    • Anyone expelled from the game will be expected to be out of sight and sound before the game restarts  
    • Failure to comply results in forfeiture of the game for the entire team.  
  • All referee’s decisions are final
  • Please be respectful of other both on and off the court. Foul language will not be tolerated
  • Any team/individual infractions will be dealt with in accordance with the Intramural Code of Conduct 
  • Most importantly, this is a recreation league, so have fun!
