Intramural Basketball Rules

Team Composition

  • Roster Size: minimum 7 people, maximum 10 people
  • No more than 3 extramural and/or varsity players per team
  • A maximum of 5 players are permitted on the court at one time
  • A match may not proceed with less than 5 players
    • If the minimum number of players are not present, the team will default
    • An exception can be made if an injury occurs during a game
  • Teams must have at least 2 players of each gender on the court at all times

Match Procedures

  • Please be in the gym and ready to participate at least 10 minutes before your first game.
    • If your team is not on the court and ready to play by 5 minutes after your start time, it is an automatic forfeit against you for the entire game.
    • A 24-hour notice is a requirement if your team will be missing from the game(s).
    • Without any notice your team will face a forfeit, and the opposing team will win the match.
  • Games will consist of two, 20-minute run time halves with a 5-minute halftime
  • Baskets will count as 2 or 3 points depending on where the ball was released from:
    • 2-point baskets are shots released from a player’s hand while their feet touched the floor last within the 3-point field goal line
    • 3-point baskets are shots released from a player’s hand while their feet touched the floor last from outside of the 3-point field goal line. The shooter may not be touching the floor on or inside the 3-point line
  • Default games result in a score of 30-0
  • If both teams default, it will result in a score of 0-0
  • The first half will begin with a jump ball; the second half will begin with a throw in by the team that lost the jump ball in the first half
  • Each team will be permitted one 30-second timeout per half. These stop the clock and are non-transferable
  • Timeouts may only be called when there is a stoppage in play (i.e., dead ball). In the last 2 minutes of the game, timeouts may be called directly after a basket is made (i.e., before the inbound)
  • Substitutions can only occur during a stoppage in play and must be acknowledged by the referee
  • On dead balls, the play always begins by the referee handing the ball to the player
